A somber day

June 27, 2018

Today was our more sobering day.  We talked to the kids about how emotional we had heard it could be to visit a concentration camp, and we set out to see the grounds and buildings of the Dachau Concentration Camp.  I don’t think appreciate is the right word for this kind of tour, but we all gained some insight into the terrible events that took place here.

I was fairly stoic most of the time, but I had to fight back tears when I saw the display about the bodies that the American soldiers found when they liberated the camp.  There is a museum in one of the larger buildings with several displays and a twenty-minute movie about the Holocaust – one younger boy who was there actually fainted as he walked out of the movie.  It was a pretty powerful place.

After spending a few hours at Dachau, we went into Munich to see the old town area.  We heard some bells ringing, but did not time our visit right to see the little characters dancing around the Glockenspiel.  We did have to do the touristy thing and eat dinner in the Hofbrauhaus – the oversized pretzels were good but a bit pricey.  The rest of the food was more reasonably priced and okay.  Maybe if I were a beer drinker, I would have been more impressed.

Then we went back for our 2nd and final night in probably our favorite AirBnb of the trip.
